🍌 Vitamin B6

The helper behind more than a hundred reactions, from hemoglobin to mood.

🔬 The science, kept simple

Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) is a coenzyme, a small molecule that dozens of enzymes need in hand before they can work. It helps build hemoglobin, break down and rebuild amino acids, make the brain messengers serotonin and dopamine, and keep the amino acid homocysteine from piling up in the blood. It is water-soluble, so you need a steady supply from food.

Why you need it: Healthy red blood cells, steady mood and sleep chemistry, a working immune system, and lower homocysteine.

Daily target: About 1.3 to 1.7 mg a day for adults.

📖 In Scripture

'Man shall not live by bread alone' (Matthew 4:4)... and even the bread matters: the whole grain carries B vitamins that refining strips away. Daniel and his friends thrived on 'pulse' (Daniel 1:12), the beans and lentils that are some of the best B6 on the table.

⚖️ Worth knowing

Food is safe. Long-term supplements above about 100 mg a day can cause nerve damage in the hands and feet, which usually reverses when the supplement stops.
