Vitamin A (Beta-Carotene)
A skin- and immune-supporting vitamin best taken in its gentle, plant-based carotene form.
📊 How it ranks (our editor score) — 65/100Tap to see the breakdown
🌱 What it is
Beta-carotene is the plant-based precursor to vitamin A found in carrots and other orange and dark-green vegetables, which the body converts to active vitamin A as needed.
✨ Why it's good for you
- Supports healthy skin turnover
- Plant-based form is very safe in normal amounts
- Delicious way to eat more vegetables
🥄 How to use it
Get beta-carotene from food sources like carrot juice and dark green and yellow-orange vegetables; if supplementing, choose the beta-carotene form for a wider safety margin than preformed vitamin A.
How much: Prefer food-based beta-carotene (carrot juice, leafy greens); supplement conservatively, avoiding high-dose preformed vitamin A.
Why it works: Vitamin A supports the skin's renewal process and immune-cell function, which is why deficiency shows up as rough, acne-prone skin and increased susceptibility to infection.
⚠️ Cautions
- High-dose supplementation is dangerous in excess — do not exceed 10,000 IU per day of preformed vitamin A without medical guidance, and note beta-carotene itself is generally much safer at high intake.
- Women who are or may become pregnant should avoid high-dose preformed vitamin A supplements.
- Very high carotene intake can (harmlessly) turn skin slightly orange — cut back if this happens.
