🌱 What it is
Omega-3s are essential polyunsaturated fats the body cannot make on its own, found in fatty fish, flaxseed, chia, walnuts, and algae oil.
📜 Where it comes from
Interest in omega-3 fats grew from twentieth-century observations of Inuit and other fish-eating populations who had notably low rates of certain heart problems despite high-fat diets, prompting researchers to study the fatty fish and marine oils long part of their traditional diet. This research through the later twentieth century built omega-3s into a widely recommended nutrient, now also sourced from flaxseed, chia, walnuts, and algae for those avoiding fish.
✨ Why it's good for you
- Supports brain and nervous system health
- May help balance a healthy inflammatory response
- Supports heart and immune health
🙏 Begin with prayer
Prayer is the first remedy, not the last resort. Whether you are facing this yourself, caring for someone who is, or simply reading to understand — here is a simple prayer you are welcome to make your own, in your name or in theirs:
Dear God, thank You for the good fats You placed in fish and flax, quiet gifts for mind and body. Bless their use in our home, whether for a busy young mind, a weary heart, or a body fighting itself. Grant wisdom to use them rightly and patience where progress is slow. Where healing is not Your will right now, grant grace to carry on trusting You. In Jesus' name, Amen.
“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.”— James 1:5
🥄 How to use it
Get omega-3s from ground flaxseed or fresh flax oil (refrigerated), chia seeds, walnuts, and fatty fish or algae-based oil. A fish oil or algae oil supplement can be taken as directed on the label if dietary sources are limited.
How much: As directed on the product label; commonly 1,000-2,000 mg combined EPA/DHA daily from fish or algae oil.
Why it works: Correcting a common omega-3 to omega-6 imbalance may help support immune function, brain health, and a healthy inflammatory response.
⚠️ Cautions
- Flax oil is fragile and must be kept fresh and refrigerated, or it can turn rancid.
- High-dose fish oil may thin the blood — check with a doctor if you take blood thinners or before surgery. If you have Crohn's disease or lupus, use omega-3s alongside — not in place of — your prescribed medical treatment.
