🔬 The science, kept simple
Omega-3s are polyunsaturated fats that stay flexible at body temperature, and cell membranes built with them... especially in the brain, eyes, and heart... work better for it. Plants supply ALA (flax, chia, walnuts); the long-chain forms EPA and DHA can be made from ALA only sparingly, which is where algae oil earns its place.
Why you need it: Brain and eye structure, steadier heart rhythm, less inflammatory signaling, and healthy triglyceride levels.
Daily target: About 1.6 g of ALA a day for men, 1.1 g for women... one tablespoon of ground flax covers it.
📖 In Scripture
Flax is one of Scripture's oldest crops... linen clothed priests and wrapped the Saviour's tomb (Exodus 28:39; John 19:40). The same humble seed carries the richest plant store of omega-3.
🥇 Best food sources, ranked
- Flaxseed, ground ... about 1.6 g ALA per tablespoon
- Chia seeds ... about 2.5 g ALA per tablespoon
- Walnuts ... about 2.5 g ALA per ounce
- Algal oil (DHA/EPA) ... typically 200-500 mg DHA+EPA per capsule
- Edamame and soy foods ... about 0.3 g ALA per cup
Figures are approximate, in the style of USDA FoodData Central; real foods vary with soil, variety, and cooking.
⚖️ Worth knowing
Grind flaxseed fresh or buy it milled, since whole seeds mostly pass through. Omega-3 oils oxidize easily... keep them cold and away from light.
