High-Dose PABA

25/100
RemedyRank score

Historical claim, not recommended: an old source urged high-dose PABA, including injections, for vitiligo, but large doses can injure the liver and interact with antibiotics.

🛑 RemedyRank warns against this

High-dose PABA can cause nausea and skin rash.

This page exists so the reasons are written down plainly, not because the practice is recommended. Nothing is sold here. If a doctor has prescribed something for a diagnosed condition, follow their guidance — that is a decision between you and them, and it is a different thing from trying this at home.

👶 Safe for children?

This remedy carries age-related cautions. Please read them before giving it to a child, and check with your pediatrician or pharmacist first.

  • Vitiligo should be evaluated by a doctor or dermatologist; avoid in pregnancy, breastfeeding, children, and liver or kidney disease.

🌱 What it is

PABA is a compound related to the B vitamins, here proposed at high oral doses and even by injection in an attempt to repigment skin affected by vitiligo.

📜 Where it comes from

An older remedy book urged large oral doses of PABA, para-aminobenzoic acid, at 100 mg four times daily, plus possible PABA injections alongside pantothenic acid, to try to restore lost skin pigment in vitiligo. This grew out of the megavitamin movement's habit of treating any B-vitamin-family compound as a cure-all when taken in large enough amounts.

🙏 Begin with prayer

Prayer is the first remedy, not the last resort. Whether you are facing this yourself, caring for someone who is, or simply reading to understand — here is a simple prayer you are welcome to make your own, in your name or in theirs:

Heavenly Father, I come to You first, before anything else I try. You know my body better than I ever will, and You know what is behind this trouble. Give me wisdom for the steps ahead, courage to change what harms me, and patience with slow mending. If it be Your will, restore my health; and if the way is longer than I hope, hold me close through all of it. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Heal me, O LORD, and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved: for thou art my praise.Jeremiah 17:14

🥄 How to use it

RemedyRank does not recommend this. See a dermatologist for vitiligo evaluation and treatment options.

How much: None. Not recommended at any dose.

Why it works: The old claim supposed PABA would help restore melanin production in the skin, but high-dose PABA can cause nausea, skin rash, and at large or prolonged doses liver injury and low blood sugar, and self-injection carries its own serious risks.

⚠️ Cautions

  • High-dose PABA can cause nausea and skin rash.
  • Large or prolonged doses have been linked to liver injury and low blood sugar.
  • PABA can interfere with sulfonamide antibiotics.
  • Injections should never be self-administered at home.
