👶 Safe for children?

This remedy carries age-related cautions. Please read them before giving it to a child, and check with your pediatrician or pharmacist first.

  • Avoid unsupervised home sulfur use, especially in children, pregnancy, and breastfeeding.

🌱 What it is

Sulfur ointment is precipitated sulfur, usually 5-10 percent, mixed into a petroleum-jelly base and applied to the skin, historically used against the scabies mite.

📜 Where it comes from

Sulfur ointment has a long folk-medicine history in both Europe and the American frontier as a treatment for skin parasites and itch conditions, going back centuries before modern prescription anti-parasitic creams existed. It remains available today mostly for cases where prescription treatments cannot be used.

✨ Why it's good for you

  • Historically used as an anti-parasitic skin treatment
  • Sometimes used today when prescription scabies treatments are unavailable or unsuitable

🙏 Begin with prayer

Prayer is the first remedy, not the last resort. Whether you are facing this yourself, caring for someone who is, or simply reading to understand — here is a simple prayer you are welcome to make your own, in your name or in theirs:

Father, I am bringing someone else to You today. You know them by name, and You know what this is costing them — the parts they say out loud and the parts they carry quietly. Give them relief where relief can come, and Your nearness where it cannot. Guide the hands and judgement of everyone caring for them, and show me how to be a help rather than a weight. If it be Your will, restore them; either way, hold them. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.James 5:16

🥄 How to use it

Only under a clinician's guidance: applied neck-to-toe on clean, cool, dry skin at bedtime for several consecutive nights, with all bedding and clothing laundered and close contacts treated at the same time. It is not a first choice for self-diagnosis or self-treatment.

How much: 5-10 percent sulfur in petroleum jelly, applied as directed by a clinician for several consecutive nights; not for self-dosing.

Why it works: Sulfur is toxic to the scabies mite and its eggs on contact, which is the traditional basis for its use, though modern prescription treatments such as permethrin are generally preferred as more reliable and pleasant to use.

⚠️ Cautions

  • Sulfur must never be swallowed.
  • It stains fabric, has a strong smell, and can irritate the skin.
  • Scabies should be confirmed and treated by a clinician... standard care is prescription permethrin or a similar medicine... and all close contacts, bedding, and clothing must be treated together.
