🌱 What it is

A simple mix of salt, baking soda, and water that can help replace fluids and electrolytes in an emergency when professional help is delayed.

✨ Why it's good for you

  • Simple household ingredients
  • May help support hydration while awaiting help
  • Easy to prepare quickly

🙏 Begin with prayer

Prayer is the first remedy, not the last resort. Whether you are facing this yourself, caring for someone who is, or simply reading to understand — here is a simple prayer you are welcome to make your own, in your name or in theirs:

Great Physician, in this frightening moment of burn and shock, with help not yet within reach, I cry out to You as our refuge and strength. Guide the hands of whoever is caring for this person, and let this small mixture be nothing more than a stopgap until real help arrives. Send emergency care quickly, Lord, and hold this hurting body in Your peace until it comes. In Jesus' name, Amen.

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.Psalm 46:1

🥄 How to use it

This is a stopgap measure only, not a replacement for medical care. Mix 1 quart of cool water with 1 teaspoon salt and 1/2 to 2 teaspoons baking soda; have the person sip it slowly over 15 minutes while you seek or await emergency help.

How much: 1 quart water with 1 tsp salt and 1/2-2 tsp baking soda, sipped slowly over 15 minutes.

Why it works: The mixture supplies water, sodium, and bicarbonate to help offset fluid and electrolyteTiny minerals like sodium and potassium that help your muscles and nerves work right. More → losses from burns or shock.

⚠️ Cautions

  • Call emergency services immediately for third-degree burns or shock — this drink does not replace medical treatment
  • Modern first-aid guidance (Red Cross, Mayo Clinic) advises against giving anything by mouth to a person in shock or with serious burns, even if they are conscious and alert, due to aspiration risk and the possibility they will need anesthesia soon -- never give to an unconscious, convulsing, or vomiting person, or anyone likely to need surgery
  • Stop if the person shows signs of worsening distress and prioritize getting emergency care
