Common causes: Streptococcal throat infection spreading to the meninges or heart (endocarditis, rheumatic fever).; The resulting immune response affects the nervous system.; High-strung, nervous children are most susceptible..
First thing to try: Treat aggressively from the beginning — the earlier the treatment, the better.

🌿 Overview
Chorea is an acute infectious disease (not contagious) producing involuntary, irregular jerky movements primarily affecting the nervous system. Sydenham's chorea most commonly occurs in children aged 5–15, especially high-strung, nervous girls. It is a complication of acute endocarditis and rheumatic fever, following a streptococcal throat infection that spreads to the heart and meninges. Most attacks last 1–6 months with full recovery, but heart valve damage may be permanent. Huntington's chorea is a different, rare hereditary form appearing in mid-life with a worse prognosis.
Common signs
- Irritability and poor sleep for a few days before onset.
- Then: irregular jerky movements beginning in one hand and arm, spreading to both arms, face, and lower limbs.
- Movements are constant during waking hours, cannot be controlled, and worsen with excitement.
- They cease during sleep.
- The person may shrug shoulders repeatedly, make involuntary facial expressions, and be unable to feed themselves.
- Speech may be jerky or impossible; walking may be impaired.
- Severe cases include weakness and fever.
🔎 Why it happens
Common causes and triggers — spotting yours is often the first step to relief.
- Streptococcal throat infection spreading to the meninges or heart (endocarditis, rheumatic fever).
- The resulting immune response affects the nervous system.
- High-strung, nervous children are most susceptible.
✅ What to do
Gentle, practical steps you can take at home — start at the top.
- Treat aggressively from the beginning — the earlier the treatment, the better.
- Improve nutrition and combat anemia with graduated tonic applications (tonic frictions) and copious water drinking.
- Fomentations to the abdomen morning and night, with heating compresses during intervals.
- Secure mental quiet — isolation if necessary.
- Keep the person in fresh outdoor air as much as possible.
- Rhythmical gymnastics and systematic physical training help the patient learn to control choreic movements.
- For insomnia: prolonged neutral bath.
- For agitation: neutral pail pour to the spine, wet sheet pack.

🍽️ Eating to help
Food is one of the gentlest medicines — small, steady changes help most.
Nourishing whole-food diet: fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, legumes. Adequate iron (chlorosis/anemia is a predisposing factor). Full B-complex vitamins. Adequate water intake throughout the day. No processed food, no stimulants.
⚖️ Good to know
- Chorea is a complication of rheumatic fever and may cause permanent heart valve damage (scarring, distortion, leakage).
- Any child with chorea should have cardiac evaluation.
- The disease is more severe in pregnant women.
- Huntington's chorea is a fatal hereditary disease distinct from Sydenham's chorea — it requires specialized neurological care.
🩺 When to see a doctor
- This is a potentially serious condition that requires professional medical diagnosis and care. See a doctor promptly — the suggestions here are gentle, supportive measures only and are not a substitute for medical treatment.
