Show full details & how to prepare it
Witch hazel is made from the bark and leaves of a small shrub, and its skin-soothing power comes from natural compounds called tannins. Tannins are gently astringent — they make skin proteins draw together slightly, which calms redness, tightens and cools irritated skin, and eases the itch of bites, razor bumps, and minor flare-ups.
It is a quiet workhorse of the medicine cabinet: a dab settles the sting of bug bites and mild breakouts, and it is a classic comfort for the swelling and itch of hemorrhoids (many ready-made pads are simply witch hazel on a wipe).
Choose an alcohol-free witch hazel where you can — plain alcohol versions can be drying. It is for the outside of intact skin only; never swallow it, and try a small test spot first in case your skin is sensitive.
