🥄 How to use it
Mix one ounce of white vinegar (5% acetic acid) with one ounce of rubbing alcohol (or 70% ethyl alcohol). With the child lying on one side, pull the ear down-and-back (under age three) or up-and-back (over three) to straighten the canal, fill the canal with drops, then turn the child over to drain, and dry the outer ear with a tissue. Repeat on the other side. Use before and after swimming and at bedtime during risky seasons.
How much: Fill the ear canal briefly before and after swimming and at bedtime as needed; discontinue if drops cause more than momentary stinging.
Show full details & how to prepare it
Water trapped in the ear canal washes away protective wax and lets germs take hold. The vinegar restores an acidic environment germs dislike, and the alcohol dries remaining water. This home mix does the same work as commercial swimmer's-ear drops for pennies. If the child is sensitive to alcohol, water may replace it, though the mix will dry less thoroughly. Warm refrigerated drops in hot water before use.

⚠️ Cautions
- Never use with a ruptured eardrum, ear tubes, or ear drainage — see a clinician instead.
- Severe pain from the drops means stop, drain, and dry the ear.
- For external use in the ear canal only; keep away from eyes and mouth.
- If pain, discharge, or hearing change persists more than a couple of days, have the ear examined.
