Show full details & how to prepare it

A sitz bath simply means sitting in shallow warm water so that it covers the hips and bottom. It is a remedy hospitals still recommend, because the warm water increases blood flow to the area, relaxes the muscles, and gently cleanses and soothes tender, inflamed, or healing tissue. It is especially comforting for hemorrhoids, after childbirth or surgery in that region, and for general soreness.

Plain warm water is all that is needed; there is no need for additives. Inexpensive basins that fit over a toilet make the practice easy, but an ordinary bathtub with a few inches of water works just as well.

Ways to prepare it

Tub sitz bath: Run a few inches of comfortably warm water in a clean bathtub, sit so the water covers your hips, and relax for 10 to 15 minutes; pat dry gently.
Basin sitz bath: Use an over-the-toilet sitz basin filled with warm water for a soakResting a body part (or the whole body) in warm, treated water. How to make a soak that is easy to repeat several times a day.

⚖️ Cautions

  • Keep the water comfortably warm, not hot, to avoid burns or irritation of already-tender skin.
  • If pain, bleeding, or swelling worsens or does not improve, see a doctor — a sitz bath soothes but does not cure underlying problems.

📚 Why we trust it

  • A standard post-surgical and comfort therapy
  • A traditional warm-water remedy
