Artemisinin is a compound derived from the Chinese herb Artemisia annua (sweet wormwood), the basis of modern artemisinin-based antimalarial drugs.
📜 Where it comes from
Sweet wormwood, or qing hao, appears in Chinese medical texts dating back over a thousand years as a treatment for fevers. In the 1970s Chinese scientist Tu Youyou isolated its active compound, artemisinin, while searching ancient texts for a malaria treatment, work that later earned a Nobel Prize and gave rise to the artemisinin-based drugs used worldwide today.
