📍 Acupuncture

The needles have been studied more than almost anything in alternative medicine. Here is what they found.

📜 Where it comes from

Acupuncture is a pillar of Traditional Chinese Medicine, built on the teaching that a life energy called qi flows through channels (meridians) and that illness comes from its blockage or imbalance, which needles at specific points restore. That framework grew from Taoist philosophy; the meridians do not correspond to any anatomical structure. It reached Western attention in the 1970s and is now widely offered for pain.

🔬 What the science shows

This is the most thoroughly tested alternative therapy. Large reviews find that acupuncture relieves some kinds of chronic pain modestly better than no treatment, but sham acupuncture (needles placed at random points, or retractable needles that never enter the skin) works nearly as well. In other words, the benefit that exists does not depend on the meridians or on qi. Researchers attribute it to expectation, attention, relaxation, and the body's response to a mild stimulus.

⚠️ Where it goes wrong

A person can accept a needle without accepting Taoism, and many do. The concern is what comes with it: practitioners who diagnose by 'reading' qi, treatments framed as balancing spiritual energies, and a worldview in which health is the flow of an impersonal force rather than the gift of a personal Creator. Discernment means separating the modest physical effect from the spiritual system it is sold with.

📖 The better way

For chronic pain, the approaches with stronger evidence and no philosophy attached are the ones this site already covers: regular walking and gentle exercise, hot and cold hydrotherapy, massage, weight and sleep management, anti-inflammatory whole foods, and, where a doctor agrees, physical therapy. If someone chooses acupuncture for pain, they should go in knowing that the needle, not the energy, is what is doing whatever gets done.

Scripture: Colossians 2:8 · Psalm 139:14 · Proverbs 3:7-8

✅ Keep the good

  • Taking chronic pain seriously and treating it patiently
  • Relaxation and focused attention on the body
  • Regular follow-up rather than one-off fixes
