🌿 Overview
Rabies destroys nerve cells in the brain. It is transmitted by the bite of an infected animal (most commonly dogs, also bats, foxes, skunks). Once symptoms appear, the disease is almost always fatal. The Pasteur vaccine series, started before symptoms develop, is over 99% effective.
Common signs
- Symptoms appear 1–3 months after bite (sometimes longer)
- Numbness, soreness, and tingling at the bite site
- Sensations spread throughout the body
- Difficulty swallowing, breathing, and talking
- Increasing muscle spasms
- Progressive mania and agitation
- Final stages: depression, exhaustion, paralysis, coma, death
- Difficulty swallowing water (hydrophobia)

🍽️ Eating to help
Food is one of the gentlest medicines — small, steady changes help most.
Favor these
- Rest and supportive nutrition during vaccination series
- Antibiotic herbs: garlic, echinacea
Go easy on
- Nothing specific — vaccination is the priority
Vaccination is the only proven life-saving measure. Natural remedies are adjuncts only.
⚖️ Good to know
- Once symptoms appear, death is virtually inevitable — do not wait for symptoms
- About 10–12% of those bitten by a known rabid animal and untreated will contract rabies
- Rabies in humans is sometimes misdiagnosed as stroke — inform doctors of animal exposure
- Never use a hot match or burning to remove ticks near a wound — this is irrelevant to rabies
🩺 When to see a doctor
- This is a potentially serious condition that requires professional medical diagnosis and care. See a doctor promptly — the suggestions here are gentle, supportive measures only and are not a substitute for medical treatment.
- Immediately after any animal bite that could involve rabies — do not wait for symptoms to appear.
