🖐️ Energy healing and Reiki
Warm hands and kind attention help. The 'universal life energy' is another matter.
📜 Where it comes from
Reiki was founded in Japan in the 1920s by Mikao Usui, who taught that a practitioner can channel a universal life-force energy through the hands after an 'attunement' passed down from master to student. Therapeutic Touch, chakra balancing, pranic healing, and similar systems share the same root idea, drawn from Hindu and Taoist teaching about an energy body that a trained person can sense and manipulate. Many hospitals now offer these under the banner of integrative care.
🔬 What the science shows
Controlled studies of Reiki and Therapeutic Touch consistently find that they perform no better than sham treatment by an untrained person doing the same hand motions. A well-known 1998 study in the Journal of the American Medical Association tested 21 practitioners who claimed to sense the human energy field; they could not detect a hand held near theirs any better than chance. Patients do often report feeling calmer, which researchers attribute to rest, quiet, a caring presence, and expectation.
⚠️ Where it goes wrong
The comfort is real; the explanation is not. A practice that asks you to open yourself to an unseen energy, transmitted through a lineage of initiations, is spiritualism with a clinical vocabulary. Scripture warns plainly against seeking unseen powers apart from God (Deuteronomy 18:10-12) and tells us to 'try the spirits' (1 John 4:1). The Holy Spirit is a Person, not a force to be channeled.
📖 The better way
The benefit these sessions deliver is available without the mysticism: unhurried rest, gentle touch, a caring person, and prayer. The Bible's own picture of healing hands is the laying on of hands with prayer by the elders (James 5:14-15), asking God directly rather than channeling anything. Massage from a trained therapist, a warm bath, and time with someone who listens supply the rest.
Scripture: James 5:14-16 · 1 John 4:1 · Deuteronomy 18:10-12 · Acts 3:6
