Mind & spirit

Christian-based CBT

Long before psychology named it, Scripture described it: the battle for the mind is fought thought by thought. Cognitive behavioral therapy — CBT — is simply a disciplined way of noticing what we tell ourselves, testing it, and replacing what is false. Anchored in God's Word instead of in self alone, it becomes something older and deeper: the renewing of the mind.

What it is

CBT rests on a simple observation: feelings usually follow thoughts. A thought like “I always fail” or “God has forgotten me” arrives uninvited, gets believed without a trial, and drags the whole day down after it. CBT teaches a person to catch that thought, write it down, ask whether it is actually true, and answer it with the truth. Christian-based CBT does the same work — but the standard of truth is not merely “more balanced thinking.” It is what God says.

Be transformed by the renewing of your mind.

Romans 12:2

Casting down imaginations... and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.

2 Corinthians 10:5

Whatsoever things are true... honest... just... pure... lovely... of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

Philippians 4:8

Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee.

Isaiah 26:3

How people practice it

  1. Notice — keep a simple thought record. When the mood drops, write the thought that came just before it.
  2. Test — ask of it what you would ask of any witness: is this true? whole? Would I say it about a friend?
  3. Answer — replace it, out loud or on paper, with what is true — and for the believer, with what God has actually said.
  4. Act — feelings follow footsteps as well as thoughts: sunlight, a walk, honest work, service to someone else.
  5. Pray — not as a technique but as the frame around all of it: “Search me, O God, and know my heart.”

Many find this pairs naturally with the eight laws of health — the NEWSTART principles woven through every guide here — because the mind heals best in a body that is sleeping, moving, and eating well.
